Beer Bar in Brussels: La Fleur en Papier Doré

Don't get me wrong. It's not hip. It's not young. It's not trendy. But it's all about old Brussels atmosphere. Apparently La Fleur en Papier Dore is the oldest bistro in Brussels. Lovely on a Sunday afternoon, for a couple of beers and a quick bite. We'll definitely go back as there is so much more to take in.

Beer Bar in Brussels - Maison du Peuple

A great, and recently redone bar ... not far from the classic Bar de l'Union which I still have to write about. Here La Maison du Peuple. We really enjoyed the new brick look, the open space, the laid back atmosphere and of course the decent choice of beers. More of a Sunday after market beer bar, worth a stop though if around.

Beer Bar in Turnhout - In Den Spytighen Duvel

A series of beers and beer bars reviewed by Michael follows for the next couple of days. This will give us the chance to try and drink some more for you.

Turnhout is about a 50 minute train ride from Antwerp, and almost the same by car. The Spytighen Duvel (Mournful Dead) is situated a short walk from the Market place.
Once it opened ( it opened an hour later than listed), the range of beers on offer was, at a guess into the hundreds. Ample seating space, and a friendly atmosphere, it is well worth going to if you are in that neck of the woods.

This is a very pleasant bar situated in the heart of the old town in Antwerp, at the foot of the cathedral. It has a beer menu of around 100, with all styles catered for.
Service here is very quick and friendly, and the setting, with outside seats and tables ideal on a warm spring afternoon. The only downside is the toilets which are communal.

For beer selection, this is probably the second best pub in Belgium (after Delirium Cafe). The selection is vast, and covers new as well as very, very old beers.
Location wise, it is about a 15 minute walk from the main old town centre, and pretty hard to find without a decent large scale map.
Whilst the beer list is massive, and the cellar awash with beers from the past, the downside is the total lack of enthusiasm from the owners. If a beer that you want is in the cellar, be prepared for a long wait as they motivate themselves to take the five metre walk to the cellar. The pub is small, with room for perhaps only 30 sitting customers, and is well decorated with Belgian beer memorabilia. A small smile would have been great, but one does come away thinking that they have done US a favour rather than the other way round. That aside, it is still well worth a visit.

Beer Bar in Brussels - The Guardian Selection
Currently I am pretty busy with my non-beer-blogging life so apologies for the sudden silence. Any guest bloggers ready to review some Belgian Beers?
In the meantime, The Guardian wrote an interesting piece on Brussels Beer Bars. Some classics (Monk) made it to the list. Others, surprisingly, not. Do you agree with the top 10 selection? What are your favorite beers bars in Brussels?

Beer Bar in Brussels - Poechenellekelder

Try saying this after a few beers :)
(Thank you to Keith, a reader of this blog for reminding me to write about this bar.)
Anyway, beside the unpronounceable name this is a great beer bar in Brussels. Although on a very touristic path (literally opposite the Mannekin Pis) this bar is a great stop. The beer list is extensive, the bartenders are more than enthusiastic about Belgian beers and the specials never disappoint.
We always include the Poechenellekelder on our 'visitors' must see tour but occasionally stop there off-visit, for a drink as well. They also serve some food and word of wisdom: if you do order the cheese, understand they actually refer to a whole chunk of cheese as sold in supermarkets / shops. So if inclined combine a cheese platter with a meat one. Trust me! I am a devoted cheese lover and yet, I always think they serve too much cheese ...

Beer Bar in Brussels - Toone VII

And another bar worth a try - the Toone VII. I completely ignored it even exists but a great find. An odd combination of puppet theater and great beer.

Beer Bar in Brussels - Delirium Cafe

All I will tell you is this: the bar offers well, about every single beer in Belgium. Over 2000 (!!!) beers are on offer and it is a real challenge to go through all of them. But everyone has to start somewhere. Cheers!

Beer Bar in Brussels - Chez Moeder Lambic

So here it is: another one of my favorite Belgian Beer Bars in Brussels. It is the Chez Moeder Lambic. Conveniently located in a busy commune of Brussels, the Chez Moeder Lambic is a very small bar but oh-ho! The beer list is endless and a lot of the beers can be found on tap as well. The bar offers over 350 Belgian Beers (!!!) so I'd say it's a must for every Belgian Beer lover out there.
Note: I have to update the photo. See comments!

Beer Bar in Brussels - Bier Circus

Otherwise a good beer bar, the Bier Circus has a constant support group and the choice of beer served is not bad either :)

Beer Bar in Brussels - La Mort Subite

Just because I kept mentioning it. Plus it is a bar which helped us dicover yet more Belgian beers. A la Mort Subite.
Beer Bar in Brussels - Delirium Cafe

Knut Albert mentioned in his comments he enjoys not only the beer, but also the scenes 'behind the beers', namely the Belgian bars. Here is a typical shot of one, the Delirium Cafe a must for every beer lover (or not!).
